Two Short Book Reviews: My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century and Someone Else’s Summer

Last month I wrote two short book reviews on my blog, for books I have previously read but never reviewed here on my blog. Since I am pretty satisfied by how they turned out, I decided to do it once again, for books that I have read while I was in a reviewing slump.

My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century by Rachel Harris

My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century is a ya time-travel novel that will make you laugh more then few times while reading.
This is just like you could imagine from the title, a sweet, fluffy story that could even make you swoon (just) a little bit (I mean, Lorenzo is swoon worthy all the way!).

I remember how confused I was at the very beginning, because our main protagonist Cat travels time in a heartbeat, and it feels like she isn’t even freaked out about it. I mean, not at all!
I was confused myself but she had no problem figuring out what was hapening or fitting in.

The story is silly at times and the first half was bit boring (sometimes), but the second half is really intense and it makes you read more and faster. In other words, it compensates the first half.

This is a ya, but I would like to note that it would probably be more appealing to the younger audience (between 13-16 years old teens).

I had fun reading this book and would recommend it to those who look for some fluffy entertainment in their reads.

Someone Else’s Summer by Rachel Bateman

First of all, how cool the author’s surname is?! It’s almost like Batman, but with E in between.
And now… let’s get into the book…

This book is perfect for summer (ok, I know I’m late, but you can always read it on a sunny day, even if it’s not summer, or maybe save it for next year?), and it’s perfect combination of serious and emotional with lovely and swoon worthy.

The story follows Anna who lost her sister Storm. One day she finds her sister’s bucket list, and along with Storm’s best friend Cameron she spends the summer trying to cross of as many things from the list as she can.

This novel is an emotional roller coaster that I couldn’t put down, and I understand why many people say it’s their favorite.

Review:

In A New York Minute is a short story, so I’ll try to make my review as short as it can be.

Claudia Carroll is an author I can’t help but notice on my Goodreads page every once in a while, in a „similar books“ section. As a devoted chick lit reader, browsing books is what I do on regular basis, so it is no surprise that her books cought my attention with their beautiful and sweet covers (all of her covers are gorgeous, that is a fact! Even this one is so astonishing, I could stare at it and forget about time).

The one and main reason why I decided to pick In A New York Minute as my first Claudia Carroll read is that it was short and it was free.
From that, I figured out I can decide whether I should buy some of her already released work.

In 23 pages Claudia Carroll managed to grab my attention, make me appreciate her writing style and won me as a reader.

The story follows woman named Amy who moved to New York and is trying it’s dating scene.
The writer described New York so well that the whole time while reading I had that New York vibe (you know, the one you have when watching Sex and the City).

It would be a shame if I’d talk too much about this story since it is pretty short and giving anything away would be a sin, but I willd tell you that out of all the reads I had last month, In A New York Minute was my favorite.

I liked everything about it and the only thing that I would change is a little detail closer to the end, but even with that it was a great read that I am glad I picked up.

I highly recommend it to every chick lit fan.
It is free and short, so it is a win case.

As for me, I can’t wait to read Carroll’s full lenght novels and it makes me so happy to see that there are a lot of them to choose from.

Review:

What you need to know about this book:

– The Smell of Other People’s Houses is a novel that came into existence from four different short stories.
– It follows four different perspectives, all written in first person, all points of view are teenager’s.
– This book takes place in Alaska in 1970.
– Four characters of this book are telling us different stories, but they are all intertwined at some point.
Even thugh this is a novel, you can read this book in two different ways:
1. From first page to last, like every other novel;
2. You can read only a certain POV and you will still have the complete story about the character who’s POV you’re reading.

– I think Ruth’s story was the most interesting one, but Alyce’s story was the most enjoyable to read.

What you should be warned about:

– There is some strong violence described in this book.
Not every POV is an interesting one (at least I found Hank’s story to be dull).
– This is a literally fiction that follows four teenagers, and it does not follow the pace most ya novels have.

What I liked about this book:

– Writing style is great and poetic.
– This book covers some serious topics in a realistic way and the writer did a great job describing those situations (violence, teen pregnancy, suicide attempt).
– The cover is so pretty and the title is also beautiful.
– The writer presented us a story she wanted to tell in a bit more then 200 pages and didn’t write about unnecessary situations just to make her piece longer.

What I’d like to change in this piece of work:

– Even though I knew this book was taking place in Alaska, I didn’t have a strong feeling I was reading about Alaska so I guess I’d like it if it was described in a stronger way.

Overall, this was a quick read and different from books that I usually read.
Even though I wasn’t fully satisfied with it I think many people will enjoy reading this book.

I would still recommend it to readers who’d like to read something that is taking place somewhere different then most books do and to readers of ya who’d like to start reading something out of their comfort zone, since this is a (historical) literally fiction that follows teenagers.

Review:

„In that moment he made me as if we had lifted off from the ground and were dancing amongst the stars.“

What you need to know about this short story:

  • It is a prequel to Victoria Walter’s debut novel The Second Love of My Life, that comes out this April.
  • It is written in first person, from the perspective of a young girl called Emma.
  • Emma is telling the story in two different time periods: now and then, which are separated by the three months period.
  • The Summer I Met You is a story of falling in love.
  • Although Emma and her love interest, John, are main characters in this story, they are not main characters in the full-leight novel that follows this story.
  • Main character in The Secon Love of My Life is Rose, Emma’s best friend, and we get to meet her in this prequel.

What you should be warned about:the second love

  • It contains insta-love (which is not a bad thing, from my perspective).
  • Not all 65 pages of this ebook are an actual story, some of them are a part of an exclusive extract from The Second Love of My Life.

What I liked about this book:

  • The writing style is worth to be commended
  • The way the writer describes places is just so realistic and beautiful at the same time. I could’t help but imagine Emma’s room, the view to the sea and the smell of pigs and cows in the air, it was like being there partly.
  • Both setting were just amazing.
  • Characters were likeable, especially Rose and her husband Lucas.

What I’d like to change in this piece of work:

  • I only wish it was a bit longer so we could watch how Emma and John’s love was developing and how they spent time that Summer.

Overall, the purpose of this short story is to introduce us to characters from The Second Love of my Life. In that purpose, it succeeded.
When I say I can’t wait to read Walter’s debut novel, I mean it wholeheartedly. I really enjoyed this story and find the writing style so beautiful and appealing that I just can’t wait to see what the writer is going to present us in her full-leight book.

Even though this is a prequel, it can be read on it’s own and I think if you decide to give it a try, you will probably enjoy it. I know I did.

Movie Monday: The Big Short and Creed

Movie Monday is a weekly feature here on my blog, in which I’m rambling about movies I’ve watched lately.

This week, I want to talk about two movies:

The Big Short

MV5BMjM2MTQ2MzcxOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNzE4NTUyNzE@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

The Big Short is a drama about Four men who predicted a big collapse of American Finance system (credit and housing bubble collapse, to be precise).

I found this movie pretty interesting and pretty boring at the same time.

The movie was interesting to me becasue I am kind of familiar with the bank system and find the theme of this film as something I want to know more about, since I do like economy.

However, if you don’t care about finances, banks and economy in general, I think this movie is not for you. There’s a great chance you’d just feel bored while watching.

Although the story isn’t captivating, and the way the story is told is also not the best out there, I think that actors had some amazing preformances.

I have to emphasize how perfect Christian Bale was! Just when I tought I already had a candidate for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner, Christian Bale proved me wrong and now I am not even sure wheter I’d like to see him or Tom Hardy winning that award.

Creed

Creed is the last movie in the series about Rocky Balboa. It follows a young man Adonis Johnson who is a
creed son of Apollo Creed. The former World Heavyweight Champion Rocky Balboa serves as his trainer and me
ntor.

I found this movie to be really good, it kept me interested from the beginning to the end. It had a really good premise, cute love side story, some really important topics when it comes to life and, all in all, it was a great entertaiment.

I think fans of Rocky movies will be satisfied with this film.

Note: Pictures in this post are not my property but taken from IMDb site and are property of Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros.Pictures International.
